From Rio de Janeiro to Providence, Natan Rodrigues Ferreira '25 moved to the United States from Brazil for college, discovering his passion for acting while pursuing his degree in Brown’s Theater Arts and Performance Studies and Visual Arts programs. This summer, he returned to Teatro en el Verano for a second year when his audition landed him a role in “¡Alguien Más!,” a comedy performed in both Spanish and English. The play that embodies Hispanic and Latino roots also celebrates Brazilian heritage, featuring opening music from “A Grande Família”—"Big Family"—a popular Brazilian sitcom.

The play, an adaptation by Dustin Tomas from George Bernard Shaw's “You Never Can Tell,” shows the Calderón family returning to Rhode Island after 18 years in New York City. Upon arriving, the three children urge their mother to finally reveal the identity of their father. As tensions rise and truths are exposed, the family must confront their past and redefine their relationships, navigating a journey of discovery, forgiveness, and reconciliation.

"Even though people usually praise the dramatic performances, I tend to believe that comedies are even harder to play,” said Ferreira, “so it's been a fun experience learning to trust the gags, learning to trust the lines, the script, the directors view, and not play the comedy itself."

Founded in 1988 as the Hispanic Heritage Committee, Rhode Island Latino Arts (RILA) has evolved into Rhode Island's leading nonprofit dedicated to promoting and advancing Latino arts. In 2016, RILA partnered with Trinity Rep to launch Teatro en el Verano to develop and present bilingual English/Spanish plays. This year,¡Alguien Más!” continues RILA's tradition of offering free bilingual theater annually in Providence, Central Falls, Pawtucket, Newport and Woonsocket from July 7th to early August.

During his summer job with Teatro en el Verano, Ferreira’s duties not only include prompt attendance at rehearsals, performances, and all other official calls, such as setting up the stage before the show and packing up afterward, but also a deep study of the play. "I reconnect with my character in particularly, so I go in, I read all of my lines again, and go to every single scene, and understand my objective in that scene, my obstacle, and what strategy I am having to pass by my obstacle to get into my objective," he said. Inspirations from actors like Bryan Cranston in “Malcolm in the Middle,” influence Ferreira's approach guiding his online research and providing insights for his own art.

"It's been a fun experience getting to experiment with another side of my acting skills, and I am learning a bunch of insight and just knowledge from how to do this job," said Ferreira.

In addition to acting, he also works as arts administration and events coordinator at Rites and Reason Theatre in the Africana Studies Department. This space is dedicated to developing new creative works that explore and express the experiences of the African Diaspora. His duties include cataloging props, books, and files, managing donations, and overseeing storage.

As a rising senior, Ferreira highlights the importance of networking with Brown professors, "I was introduced to it [Teatro en el Verano] by my professor Rebecca Gibel," he said. "Your professors, they are part of the industry, even though they choose to be part of the academia too, they are still part of the industry and they can introduce you to so many people, and so many opportunities."
